The COVID-19 pandemic has made remote interpreting more necessary than ever before. Since then, even though the pandemic has subsided, remote interpreting has proven to be a cost-effective, efficient alternative to onsite interpreting, so its popularity is likely to continue growing.
There are two types of remote interpreting services:

As the names suggest, the difference between these two services is the medium: VRI uses video conferencing software, while OPI relies on phone calls.

Onsite interpreting

Although remote interpreting works great in 90% of cases, sometimes onsite interpreting is still preferred. This can be for a variety of reasons:

High stakes. Healthcare encounters are some of the most critical moments in any person’s life. Losing network connection or facing other technical issues is not an option when someone’s life is on the line.
Confidentiality. Healthcare providers must ensure that all patient information is kept confidential at all times, and onsite interpreting makes this easier to accomplish than with VRI or OPI services.
Body language. Body language is essential for communication, especially for people with certain medical conditions. Onsite interpreting ensures that physical cues are not lost behind the audio or garbled in a video transmission.
Apprehension. Some people, especially elderly patients, are apprehensive about “talking to a machine.” In situations where the patient is already in a state of anxiety, having a real person in the room can help ease their worries
